Spitfire Completes Unique Formation Flights With Royal Air Force

To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Spitfire's maiden flight on March 5, 1936, a privately owned two-seat Spitfire painted blue to resemble the original prototype K5054 completed a nine-leg tour around the United Kingdom between April 7-17, flying in formation with a variety of Royal Air Force aircraft. The commemorative aircraft, actually a restored Mk IX (BS410), flew alongside an impressive range of modern military aircraft including F-35B Lightning fighters, Typhoons, Red Arrows Hawks, a P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, and an A400M transport, as well as several training aircraft types. The tour concluded with the Spitfire returning to its birthplace at Southampton Airport alongside the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Dakota. The formation flights hold particular significance because the Royal Air Force rarely conducts joint displays pairing historic and modern aircraft, unlike the U.S. Air Force's established Heritage Flight program, making this series of flights an exceptional event. The celebrations also coincided with a historically notable moment, as British F-35Bs had recently achieved their first combat shootdowns, destroying hostile drones over Jordan using ASRAAM missiles in early March 2025.
